What is Paranoid Mode?

Paranoid Mode provides enhanced security for your transfers by ensuring exclusive 1:1 communication between exactly two devices.

Understanding Paranoid Mode

Paranoid Mode is an optional security feature that locks your transfer channel immediately after the first connection is established. Once locked, no additional devices can join the channel – even with the correct link or QR code.

This prevents potential eavesdroppers or unauthorized third parties from joining your transfer, even if they somehow obtain your sharing link.

Important: With Paranoid Mode enabled, if the connection drops, you'll need to create a new channel. The locked channel cannot accept reconnections.

How It Works

Normal Mode

  • Channel stays open for multiple connections
  • Up to 10 devices can join
  • Good for sharing with groups

Paranoid Mode

  • Channel locks after first connection
  • Exactly 1:1 communication only
  • Maximum privacy guaranteed

Security Benefits

Paranoid Mode adds several layers of security to your transfers:

No Eavesdropping

Even if someone intercepts your link, they cannot join after you've connected.

Channel Locking

The server permanently marks the channel as locked – no exceptions.

Verified Connection

You know exactly who you're connected to – only one other device.

Time-Limited

Combined with 1-hour channel expiry for additional security.

When to Use Paranoid Mode

Use Paranoid Mode for:

  • Sensitive documents (financial, legal, medical)
  • Password sharing
  • Private photos or videos
  • Any transfer where privacy is paramount

Skip Paranoid Mode when:

  • Sharing with multiple people at once
  • Connection stability is uncertain
  • Convenience is more important than maximum security

Technical Implementation

Here's what happens behind the scenes when you enable Paranoid Mode:

1

Channel Creation

When you create a channel with Paranoid Mode, the server marks it as 'secure' in its configuration.

2

First Connection

When the first peer connects and WebRTC handshake completes, the server locks the channel.

3

Channel Locked

Any subsequent connection attempts are rejected with a 'channel locked' message.

4

Secure Transfer

Only the two connected peers can communicate. The channel remains locked until it expires.

How to Enable Paranoid Mode

Enabling Paranoid Mode is simple:

  1. 1. Go to InstDrop and click 'Create Connection'
  2. 2. Toggle the 'Paranoid Mode' switch before creating
  3. 3. Share the QR code or link with your recipient
  4. 4. Once they connect, the channel automatically locks
